Across Asia, Central Banks Accelerate Launch of Banknotes with Optical Features

Around the world, 166 issuing authorities circulate 1,007 banknote denominations in regular use, excluding commemoratives. According to data from the Reconnaissance DataVault, Asia leads the global charts with 314 active denominations, reflecting the region’s scale, diversity, and rapid monetary development.

Last month, we reported on the new banknote series planned in Brunei. Since then there have been announcements by Bhutan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Taiwan unveiling new notes with advanced optical security, stronger public usability, and more sustainable production.

Bhutan begins new polymer banknote series

The Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) of Bhutan has unveiled the designs for the first three notes in its new banknote family – the 100, 500, and 1,000 ngultrum (Nu). Designed and printed by De La Rue on SAFEGUARD® polymer, the series represents a significant upgrade in durability, sustainability, and public authentication. According to both the RMA and De La Rue, the new banknotes embody Bhutan’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and the enduring values of its monarchy.
