Trading Cards: The Growth Market for Optical Technologies

Two stories in this issue may appear unrelated, yet together they highlight one of the growing opportunities for the optical security technologies and security printing industry.

The first is The Pokémon Company’s decision to mark the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon trading card game (TCG) with its first-ever all-foil expansion. The second is TOPPAN’s introduction of sustainable light-shielding paper packaging for the TCG market.

Neither announcement is simply about a new product launch. Together, they reflect a broader shift in the TCG market, where premium finishes, advanced materials and authentication technologies are becoming central to product development.

Once regarded as a niche hobby, trading cards have evolved into a global collectibles industry valued at around $100 billion, with more than 100 million players and collectors worldwide. Franchises such as Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece and Disney Lorcana, alongside established sports card brands including Topps, Panini and Upper Deck, continue to drive demand across North America, Europe and Asia.
